The area around the Brugg-Windisch railway station is set to undergo profound change in the coming years. With the closure of the cable factory and the expansion of the station, the previously isolated industrial area is being transformed into a lively, open urban space.



The excellent location at the station creates ideal conditions for future-oriented development with a high mix of uses – whether as a mixed residential quarter, an innovation hub in the existing halls, or an extension and enhancement of the university campus.


The transformation will also strengthen the connection between Brugg and Windisch through new and upgraded public spaces: Hallenplatz marks the entrance to the cable factory site, the campus passage creates an attractive, green connection to Königsfelden, and Kabelwerkplatz will become a lively neighbourhood centre between the adjacent neighbourhoods. Existing buildings and structures that shape the identity of the area will be preserved, repurposed and further developed, as well as selectively opened up to create high-quality open spaces.



The Süssbach and Gleisfeld neighbourhoods are also developing into high-quality residential areas with attractive outdoor spaces. This will create diverse, lively neighbourhoods with a high quality of life and amenity – for living, working, studying and socialising.


The test planning defines a clear spatial structure. It enables step-by-step implementation and at the same time creates sufficient flexibility for future developments and coming generations. The contribution was assessed by the advisory committee as direction-setting and was recommended for further development. Acknowledgement on the topic of sustainability from the final report:
"Various aspects of sustainability are integral to this project. The urban design decisions are made in accordance with the overarching ecological guidelines. The project skilfully exploits existing spatial, structural, functional and conceptual potential to create ecological added value. Each stage makes strategic use of existing resources – from temporary uses and initial activation measures to final construction. The phased development of the building sites into ecologically functioning neighbourhoods with their own character is credible. Particularly noteworthy are the measures taken to minimise grey energy: sensible reuse of existing buildings, limitation of additional basements, regression of building height with increasing distance from the station, extensive adoption of the existing road network and the establishment of a component warehouse for circular construction (which can be used supraregionally thanks to a rail connection)."
